USS Constitution Ship Cross Section
Today, the USS Constitution is used to educate people about the role that the Navy plays in times of war and peace. As part of an initiative called Educational Outreach, it demonstrates how it operated by participating in public events. With a crew that includes 60 officers and sailors it is considered to be an optimally commissioned US Navy ship. The crew is involved in ceremonies, educational programmes, and events. The ship’s crew are all active-duty personnel of the US Navy and they provide free tours to visitors throughout the year.
USS Constitution: Restoration
Although Congress gave permission to restore the USS Constitution, it did not provide the funds for the project. The Massachusetts Society of the United Daughters of War of 1812 took an initiative to support the funding, but did not reach their target. In 1903, the president of the Massachusetts Historical Society asked Congress to rehabilitate and place the ship back on active service.
In 1905,Charles Joseph Bonaparte, the Secretary of the US Navy, proposed that the ship should be sailed out in the sea and used as target practice, then it sunk. After reading this, Moses H.Gulesiana businessman from Massachusetts, proposed to buy the ship for$10,000. Although the State Department rejected his proposal he still continued to campaign.Ultimately, in 1906, due to public protest, Congress agreed to provide funding of$100,000 for the restoration of the vessel. Consequently, the USS Constitution was converted to amuseum ship by 1907.
