About the Brigantine Phoenix
The Brigantine Phoenix was a 12-gun Greek built vessel that formed part of the Black Sea fleet in 1787. She became part of the fleet at a time when the war with the Ottoman Empire was brewing, and many Greek Corsair ships were bought to strengthen the Russian navy. The Brigantine Phoenix’s first contributed to defending the fleet during the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-1791. She was officially classified as a ‘cruising ship’ on Russian navy lists. In the summer of 1788, the ship was commissioned under the command of warrant officer Georgy Nikiforovich Benardaki, and set out to sea in search of enemy ships. On July 3rd of that year, she participated in the first battle between the Russian fleet and the ottoman empire. In 1790, the ship was used to transport supplies between Kherson and Sevastopol. Throughout the year, the Brigantine Phoenix participated in many missions, searching for enemy Turkish ships. In August 1790, she helped capture 10 Turkish ships and escorted them to Ochakov. She continued to serve the Russian navy, even sinking other enemy ships. Eventually by 1803, after being under the command of Lieutenant S. S. Karachinsky, the ship was dismantled.
