The USS Flying Fish was an American schooner, former New Your City pilot boat Independence, which was purchased by the US Navy in August of 1938. She was commissioned to be a tender in the US Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842, and her first mission was to sail to Madeira and later to Rio de Janeiro. In the early 1839, the squadron made its first voyages toward the Antarctica. In order to survey Pacific islands, the squadron rendezvous in New Zealand after the second cruise in to the Antarctic. After the separation of the squadron in 1842, the Flying Fish didn’t continue with these journeys and was sold.
