Description

The HMS Warspite

The HMS Warspite was a Queen Elizebeth-class battleship, belonging to the British Royal Navy. Launched on 26 November 1913 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, the Warspite was nicknamed “the Grand Old Lady” by Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, a name which gained popularity amongst her crew.

The Elizebeth-class battleships were conceived and brought to life by Admiral Sir John ‘Jackie’ Fisher and Winston S. Churchill. Both men played a vital role in taking the battleships from the drawing board to the sea. The HMS Warspite was first commissioned in 1915, under the lead of Captain Edward Montgomery Phillpotts. The Warspite became part of the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet, after undergoing several trials. During one of those trials she fired her 15-inch guns, and impressed Churchill, with her strength and accuracy.
