Description

The Nao Victoria was built in Ondarroa by the Basques people and named after the church of Santa Maria de la Victoria de Triana.  The Nao Victoria was given to Ferdinand Magellan by King Charles I of Spain.  She was an 85-ton ship with 42 crew members.  Along with four other ships the Spanish expedition was commanded by Magellan in August 1519.   Nao Victoria was the first merchant ship to successfully circumnavigate the world.  The Nao Victoria was the only ship to complete the voyage in September 1522.  Over half the miles she traveled were uncharted.

In December 1521 Nao Victoria sailed alone from Tidore, Indonesia.  She managed to make it back to Spain with a shipload of spices, even though she was in terrible shape with torn sails and only keeping afloat by continuous pumping of incoming water.  Nao Victoria was repaired and sailed for another fifty years.  She finally was lost in 1570 with all hands on a trip from Antilles to Seville.
