The USS Rattlesnake
The Rattlesnake sailed again under the command of Lieutenant James Renshaw. She is said to have captured some eight merchant ships in the eastern Atlantic, north of Ecuador. It captured and destroyed the Captain, the John and the Geddes. She was sailing from Liverpool to Porto, when the British frigate Leander, with 50 guns, captured her off Cape Sable on the southern tip of New Scotland. The Leander was renowned for its speed, especially in the difficult weather conditions on the day the Rattlesnake was captured. The letter from Captain George Collier of the Leander is dated 11 July and indicates that the Rattlesnake was armed with 22 guns. The Halifax shipyard reported on 31 July 1814 that the Royal Navy had purchased the Rattlesnake.
The USS Rattlesnake Ship Model
the USS Rattlesnake model is built with a remarkable level of craftsmanship, using the traditional technique of plank-on-frame construction. To ensure a high level of quality and detail, every step of the construction process is monitored. Hulls and decks are built exclusively from hardwoods. The model ship has been sanded and varnished in several layers to create a smooth finish. The details are reproduced using leather upholstery. The team of master craftsmen use the skills and expertise developed over many years to ensure that this model is identical to the original. The model is mounted on a solid wooden base and includes a brass plate.
