Aberdeen to Host Tall Ships Races Again by 2030

Aberdeen is setting its sights on hosting the Tall Ships Races once more, following the resounding success of this year’s event. With nearly half a million attendees in July and an impressive economic boost of over £30 million, the city is eager to bring the race back by 2030.

The Tall Ships Races, a major event on Scotland’s tourism calendar, attracted 496,000 visitors, many of whom were from the northeast of Scotland. The remaining crowd came from across the UK, adding to the event’s national significance. Originally projected to generate £20 million, the event’s economic impact far exceeded expectations, reaching a staggering £32 million.

The success of this year’s event—celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, with crowds flocking to Aberdeen’s harbour to admire the majestic tall ships—has laid the foundation for the city’s bid. The event’s success wasn’t just measured in economic terms but also by the spirit of the crowd, with food stalls, concerts, and the stunning maritime spectacle contributing to a truly feel-good atmosphere.

Councilor Martin Greig, chairman of the Tall Ships Event Organizing Committee, said, “It was such a joy to see so many people enjoying the spectacle of the ships in the harbour as well as the concerts, food, and stalls surrounding the event. There was such a feel-good atmosphere at the Tall Ships Races, and it would be great to bring that back to Aberdeen. We are delighted that we will be putting a formal bid in again.”

With the backing of the Port of Aberdeen and Sail Training International, the city is already in consultation to secure its bid for the next Tall Ships Races, set to take place as early as 2030. The success of this year’s event has proven Aberdeen’s capability to host such a prestigious event and further highlights the city’s growing appeal as a prime destination for major international events.

Aberdeen’s Tall Ships Races 2025 were nothing short of spectacular. If the bid for 2030 is successful, we can expect another event brimming with excitement, culture, and, most importantly, a community that is ready to welcome the world.
