The Vasco da Gama, a 219-meter cruise ship, officially marked the close of the 2025 cruise season at Lerwick Harbour in Shetland, Scotland. Sailing from Haugesund, Norway, to Hamburg, Germany, the impressive 55,877-ton vessel symbolizes the growing global recognition of Lerwick as a top cruise destination in northern Europe.
A Strong Year for Shetland’s Cruise Tourism
This year, Lerwick welcomed 127 cruise vessels, bringing in over 129,000 passengers from around the world. Despite minor weather-related delays in the North Sea, the season remained robust and steady, following last year’s record-breaking numbers.
In 2025, 34 different cruise lines included Lerwick in their itineraries, drawing passengers primarily from the USA (40%), Germany and the EU (37%), the UK (16%), and other regions (5%). The steady international interest underscores Shetland’s growing reputation as a gateway to Scotland’s natural beauty and maritime culture.
Supporting Local Communities and Businesses
Cruise tourism continues to play a vital role in Shetland’s local economy, fueling revenue for hospitality, retail, transport, and tour providers. Each visiting ship brings a wave of opportunity for local suppliers and attractions, strengthening the island’s economy and cultural exchange.
Expanding Infrastructure for the Future
A multi-million-pound dredging project, set to be completed early next year, will further boost Lerwick’s capacity to host even larger vessels at Mair’s Pier. This development will position Lerwick as an even more competitive port in northern Europe, capable of welcoming the next generation of mega-cruise ships.
Lerwick Port Authority’s Cruise & Marketing Manager, Melanie Henderson, reflected on the year’s success:
“It is always satisfying to close another successful season—from harbour operations and tour providers to local businesses and community partners.”
Looking Ahead
As Lerwick prepares for the 2026 season, the port’s continued growth and investment promise exciting prospects for Scotland’s island tourism industry. With its unique blend of rugged landscapes, warm hospitality, and world-class maritime infrastructure, Shetland remains a must-visit destination for global cruise travelers.
