The Largest Container Ship – The Emma Mærsk
The Emma Mærsk, built at the Odense Steel shipyard in Denmark, is the first E-class container ship, owned by the A. P. Moller-Maersk Group. In 2010, she was one of the longest container ships. She is capable of carrying approximately 11,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) or 14,770 TEU. She was christened at the ceremony on 12 August 2006, in honour of Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller’s wife, Emma Mærsk. She then set sail on her maiden voyage, on 8 September 2006, from Aarhus to Singapore. She made stopovers in Göteborg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Algeciras and the Suez Canal. The ship has also been featured in an episode of the Mighty Ships documentary series, on a voyage between Malaysia and Spain. The National Bank of Denmark has put a commemorative coin of 20 DKK in her honour.
The Emma Mærsk Ship Model
Maersk has specified a maximum capacity of 14 tonne fully loaded containers. The blue ship model is an exact replica of the original. The ship is powered by a Wärtsilä-Sulzer 14RTFLEX96-C engine, the largest diesel unit in the world, with a production capacity of 81 MW (109,000 hp) and an ability to burn 14,000 litres (3,600 US gal) of heavy fuel oil per hour. It has features to reduce environmental impacts, by reducing the generation of greenhouse gases. All the materials used in the construction of this model container have been carefully selected and prepared, from dried hardwoods to polished metal fittings and hand-sewn leather upholstery. All pre-made models are ready for display and include a wooden base and brass nameplate. You can display your model in a glass case, to protect it from dust and weathering.
