About the Ferrari Hydroplane XL
The Ferrari Hydroplane originates back to the 1950s, inspired by Achille Castoldi. She was built by the Cantier Timossi shipyard in Azzano. Castoldi created the Ferrari Hydroplane to set a world speed record on water. To achieve his goal, he teamed up with Ferrari racing drivers Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi. In order to convince Enzo Ferrari to provide a 4.5 litre Ferrari V12 engine for the construction of the Ferrari Hydroplane XL. This was the same engine that Ferrari used for the first Grand Prix victory at Silverstone in 1951.
Castoldi further increased the power of the engine, by fitting the Ferrari Hydroplane with two superchargers. The boat’s speed increased to 502 bhp, and reached a maximum speed of 150.19 mph in 1953 on Lake Iseo. This world speed record for a boat weighing 800 kg still holds to this day.
