Built in 1936, by Messrs Harland & Wolff, it went on to be launched on St. Patrick’s Day, 1936, by Anne Chamberlain, the Prime Minister’s wife at the time. Used as part of the blockade by the British navy against Germany, the Belfast ship unfortunately struck a German mine. With two years of repairs on its extensive damage, in November 1942, it was upgraded to become on the most powerful liners of the Royal Navy.
The most famous feats were its Battle of the North Cape, the destruction of German warship, as well as participation in Operation Overlord. After WW2, Belfast went on to be used in the Korean War during 1950-52. Between 1956 and 1959, it underwent modernisation, with other commissions following before entered reserve in 1963.
Presently this historical warship is docked on the river Thames, open to tourists for tours and exhibitions. The tour takes around two hour to complete, with nine decks, boiler and engine rooms available for viewing.
