Handcrafted, scratch built and ready made La Normandie wooden ship model
These model ships were produced for our corporate client Beacon Display to showcase in a new Corporate building design in Portugal (a picture can be seen where the model ship is on display at the centre). The Custom Bespoke Service included the research of the history of the Bremen Cog and procuring the original ship plans from the Deutsches Schiffahrts museum in Bremerhaven, Germany.
During the construction of the Bremen Cog model, the client was provided digital pictures during the various stages of construction to finished product, ensuring complete customer satisfaction. Beacon display confirmed their order of seven different model ships in September 2004 for delivery middle of February 2005. The model ships were delivered ahead of schedule and on budget.

French line steamship built in 1882 at Barrow by Barrow Shipbuilding Co. for shipping company called Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. This ship used by C.G.T. ran emigrants and other passengers between Havre and New York. Originally named, Ville de New York, the French flagship of the C.G.T. shipping company offered more than 1100 passenger capacity and was run by compound engine reaching service speed of more than 16 knots.
Because of that exceptional service speed, the French government agreed to renew C.G.T.’s mail contract. The first major accident occurred in 1883 when entering Le Havre where she accidentally hit and sank the brig Alliance. After this accident, La Normandie had to be repaired and went back to service in March, 1884. The name ‘La’ Normandie was assigned to this ship to match the other steam ships from C.G.T. line which entered the seas in 1886.
Another accident occurred in 1892 when entering the Le Havre, she rammed and sank another ship causing dead of 9 shipmen. The last serious accident occurred in 1895 when a build-up of gas caused an explosion and a subsequent fire. La Normandie was part of the French contribution to honour Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.
Three years later, La Normandie was entirely removed from the North Atlantic, being solely dedicated to the St. Nazaire-Havana-Vera Cruz route until she was put on a service between St. Nazaire and Panama in 1908. She remained until 1911 when she was considered too old. La Normandie made her last voyage on September 11th. She was officially taken out of service in October.
