The Robert E. Lee steamboat also carried a nickname, Monarch of Mississippi, and was built in 1866 in New Albany, Indiana. The total cost of the steamboat, which was designed by DeWitt Hill, was $200,000. The name of the ship is derived from the name of Robert E. Lee, General-in-Chief of the Confederate States of America.
The steamboat gained its biggest fame by winning a famous steamboat race against the Natchez on the route from St. Louis to New Orleans. Robert E. Lee finished the race in 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes while Natchez more than 2 hours later. The main purpose of this steamboat was to sail between New Orleans and Natchez, Mississippi. Robert E. Lee´s existence ended in September of 1822, when the ship caught fire and eventually killed 21 people.
